About Brighton

Brighton (37°54S 144°59E) is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 12 km southeast of the city. Much of the suburb lies on the shore of Port Phillip Bay and it is second only to Toorak in terms of exclusive residential housing in metropolitan Melbourne.

Brighton is distinguished by many grand homes, and the development of large residential blocks of land. On the beach, Beach Road is a popular cycling route, with off-road cycling tracks also on the beach. The North Road Pavillion is a popular cafe which has an outlook of Port Phillip Bay, while the beachfront features stunning views toward the Melbourne city skyline. North Road Brighton features many old churches and residences. The main beach in Brighton has the historic moderne Brighton Baths

The European settlement of Brighton began in 1840 with land allotments by the British Government's Land and Emigration Commission. The township was named after Brighton in England.

Brighton is serviced primarily by private vehicles and trains. Gardenvale, North Brighton, Middle Brighton, Brighton Beach on the Sandringham line.

Trams also service the western extremities of the suburb.
